Our office is closed today for the 4th of July holiday weekend, but I’m in here with the painters and the phone guys (The end of our expansion is almost in sight!)
I had planned on getting lots of work done since I’m here by myself, but all I’ve been doing is playing with my new iPhone
I have wanted one forever and finally got it as a "gift for me from me".
When I was in the AT&T store ordering it, my kids went over to check out the iPhone demos. Within seconds, they had figured out how to play the games. I guess if I have questions, I can ask my 9-year old! I think this is the beginning of a shift in our relationship…don’t know if I’m quite ready for that!
Want to help send a goody box (care package) to a soldier stationed away from home? Scrap Your Trip is donating $1.50 (up from $1.00 last year) of every order placed from 7/1 to 7/4 to Operation Gratitude.
Their "mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service member’s face and to express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American people." Care packages are filled with letters and donated goodies valued at $100, but still cost money to pack and ship.
So far we’ve raised enough to send packages to over 60 soldiers…but we’d like to bring smiles to lots more faces.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Please be safe!
As always, thanks for your business.

Do you believe one person can change the world? I do.
I believe that Copernicus changed the world when he insisted that the Sun was at the center of the universe. I believe Rosa Parks changed the world when she refused to give up her seat on the bus. I believe Bill Gates changed the world when he envisioned a computer on every desktop.
To change the world doesn’t have to be on such a big scale…it can be one person at a time. I’d like to share with you two people who inspire me and who I believe are a fantastic example of how one person…one idea…can make a huge impact.
The first is a man by the name of Bert Brady. The video of him being named Person of the Week by ABC News is several years old, but still just as inspiring. He is retired veteran who established the “Welcome Home a Hero” program at the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport. He, and a whole group of his new friends, welcome every soldier coming home. Please take a minute to watch the video – I think you’ll be glad you did. Click here to see: http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/beb.html
Another person that inspires me is Carolyn Blashek, founder of Operation Gratitude. She wanted to enlist in the military after 9/11, but they told her she was too old. She then started to volunteer at her local USO. One day when she was volunteering, a man came to speak to the chaplain, who was unavailable. He was on his way to get on a plane, back to duty. He told Carolyn “I don’t think I’ll make it back, but it really doesn’t matter, because no one would care anyway.” At that moment, she realized how important it was for the soldiers in harm’s way to believe that the people at home care about them.
So, she founded Operation Gratitude, which to date, has mailed out 451,285 care packages to troops overseas. In the beginning, she got the name of a General and sent him an e-mail asking for the names and addresses of all the soldiers under his command so that Operation Gratitude could send them a care package from home.
He wrote back” “Ma’am, I don’t think you know who I am or how many soldiers I have under my command. I currently have a force of 39,000 soldiers.”
She wrote back, “General, I don’t think you know who I am. Just send me the names and addresses and I will make sure every one of them receives a care package from us at home.” She did.
Scrap Your Trip has been a supporter of Operation Gratitude for the last few years. ( http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/operationgratitude.html)
Not on the Target or AT&T level, but last year we donated care packages for over 80 soldiers, so I know we made a difference to those 80, and that’s what matters to me.
We’re not doing a special promotion this week…I am going to donate $1.50 per order (up from $1.00 last year) of every order placed between today and July 4th to Operation Gratitude instead, so that together we can make a difference in the life of one soldier. One who is sacrificing his/her time, money, family and possibly even life to ensure that I can enjoy and revel in my freedoms this July 4th.
So, please join me in supporting our troops. You can even get some great scrapbook supplies as part of the deal! :-)

It’s Friday! It’s Friday! It’s Friday!
It feels like it’s been a long week (probably has something to do with getting up at 5am every morning!)
Thank you to everyone for your support and well wishes in my new fitness quest. I’m proud to say that I lifted a total of 11,020 pounds yesterday and have lost a total of 1.6 pounds this week! I have also been able to drastically reduce the amount of food I’m eating. It’s amazing how little food it actually takes to fill us up, if we pay attention.
Here’s my trick: The moment I think to myself, "I’m starting to feel full", I take one more bite and stop eating. If you take more than one or two bites, then the brief feeling of fullness goes away and doesn’t come back until you are too full, and that’s obviously too late. I’m telling you…my stomach shrunk fast and I’m eating WAY less than I used to. I heard that the key to getting fit was 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. Don’t know if it’s true, but trying to get better on all fronts.
One of the comments on the blog really resonated with me: " I decided this was the year to take care of ME…I will do it because it’s for ME not my kids or my husband."
Somehow along the way, selfish became a bad word, with lots of negative connatations. But what if we used the word self-care instead? Or self-preservation? Don’t we all deserve to take care of ourselves and allow ourselves the gift of time to do that without feeling or being labeled "selfish"?
So, to Dawn on the blog…congrats on this being the year to take care of you. I’m right there with ya’!
Only 12 hours left to get a great deal on the Cricut Expressions! Just enter coupon code CRICUT at checkout (with a $75 purchase) and you can get the Cricut with a savings of $191 - that’s almost 40%! (Coupon expires at 11:59pm Eastern, Friday, June 26. One coupon code per order).

I guess it’s because it was just my birthday, but I’ve really been thinking about my age lately. I know I don’t look my age…don’t act my age…and I certainly don’t feel my age! But, I am getting older and wiser and that’s just a fact. But I NEVER want to look my age, act my age or feel my age and that means I have to take some action.
Right before I went to Boston, I went for the follow-up appointment with the lung specialist. Not allergic to the cat - big surprise there! However, something else happened there that had an effect on me.
As I was checking out, there was a very nicely dressed elderly woman with two forearm crutches - you know - the kind with the cuff thing that goes around your arm. Anyway, she was complaining to the receptionist about the parking. She couldn’t find a parking spot and had to park and walk all the way around the building to get to the handicapped ramp because she couldn’t step up the curb. On my way to my car, I passed her on the sidewalk and said that "I overheard you inside saying you were having trouble with the sidewalk. Do you need some help?" She said, "No, I’m fine. I just have trouble walking and cannot walk up or down the curbs." She made a little more small talk and as I turned to walk away, she looked at me with a depth of sadness I have rarely seen and said "Don’t get old."
Then this past Saturday, we all went on a pontoon boat ride on Lake Dora, in Mt. Dora. There were three others that were going on the trip with us. I sat with my son Logan and watched two women in their 50’s struggle…and I mean struggle…to step down into the boat from the dock. Not even up, but down!
Well, that was it for me. On Monday, I joined the Y and hired a personal trainer. Yesterday I was up at 4:38 am to head to the gym and I lifted a total of 4,820 pounds. Up at 5:00 am again this morning for 2 miles on the treadmill.
I remember an old Oil of Olay commercial from when I was younger that said "Age old gracefully? Fight it every step of the way!" I didn’t understand it then. I thought you should just be accepting.
But at 42? Heck with that!
I’m going to bust my butt in the gym and I plan on doing a little number reversal and having the body of a 24-year old instead of a 42-year old when I’m done!
I’ll keep you posted with stats along my journey…anyone want to join me?
There are 296 yummy new items to look at this week. I say yummy because of the names of two of our collections: "Mango Luau" and "Popsicle" by Bo Bunny. Whew! We are finally home from Boston! There were all sorts of weather delays yesterday and we couldn’t get a flight out until this morning. This seems to happen when I try to fly out at the end of the day…from now on I am only going to fly in the morning. I was supposed to turn around and fly out to Chicago this morning for my cousin’s wedding, but there was no way I was going to make it. Sorry Jeff!
One of the things I love about getting to travel so much on business is that I get to visit lots of cities. I wish I could tell you all about Boston, but all I can tell you is this…it’s a beautiful drive from the Renaissance Hotel to the Convention Center!
Breakfast started at 7 am every morning and there were events every night until 10 pm. Not much time for sightseeing.
But the events were fun…a party on the Spirit of Boston (but it stayed docked the whole time) and a carnival themed event at the Boston World Trade Center. We even took a taxi to the original Cheers location! (see photos below)
The best part of this conference was all the people I got to meet. The top 125 Yahoo! Stores were there and we got to be a part of it. It was such an honor to meet people I’ve read about… authors of books who have helped us out…and other people who do the same thing I do all day. The conference started with them as celebrities to me, but ended with them as friends. I am a lucky girl!

What is the age where you stop caring what other people think of you? Whatever age it is, I think I’m getting close to it.
Two years ago, I took my daughter on a business trip to Ft. Lauderdale (that’s why it’s "our" place). Ft. Lauderdale is the middle of the "Gold Coast" of Florida…home to lots of money and lots of beautiful people. I can vividly remember not wanting to go to the pool with her because I didn’t want to go anywhere in my bathing suit.
I had just read an article written by Martha Beck in "O" magazine about “so what?” The jist of the article was that while we think there is a spotlight on us whenever we go anywhere or walk into a room, most people are too preoccupied with their own “stuff” to really notice or care what others are doing. And if they do, so what!
However, this past weekend’s trip to Ft. Lauderdale was quite a bit different. It’s still the land of beautiful people, but this time, I just didn’t care as much. I spent the majority of the time we were there with my hair up in a ponytail…no makeup…in the pool, having fun with my daughter, not really caring about my jiggly thighs as I walked around the pool. It felt wonderful!
“The Talk” with Lauren went well, but it was rather anti-climatic. “You brought me all the way to Ft. Lauderdale to tell me this? You couldn’t have told me this at home?” I told her that I wanted it to be a special weekend for her, uninterrupted by her little brother, and that when my Mom told me, I had a hard time looking at my Dad for awhile without thinking “Daddy put what where?”
Up until that moment, it had all been technical and although she said she understood, I could tell she hadn’t put two and two together. But with the mention of Daddy, I saw the light bulb go on and she sputtered “Daddy put…Daddy did…That’s GROSS!” That was the reaction I expected.
The expansion is almost done and going well, especially since Lani and I are in Boston this week and not having to deal with it. We are here for the Internet Retailer Convention, learning how we can make a better shopping experience for you. A new and much better site search is on its way, to help you find what you’re looking for out of our 10,000+ products. We are also talking with designers/developers about redesigning our site to make it even more functional (and prettier). What improvements would you like to see? How can we make it even better? Please leave us your ideas on the blog.
We’ve talked to Yahoo since we’ve been here and great news…you get to start a brand new wishlist! Unfortunately, the database that holds all the wishlist items became corrupted. Fortunately, they were able to recover about 600 wishlists…I hope one of them is yours.
We have over 900 new items on 25% clearance this week! But don’t put any of them on your wishlist, because we will not reordering any of these items, so when they are sold out, they are gone for good.

Happy Friday!
The drywall work is almost done, there are no more bare concrete floors and our kitchen is mostly put back together. At least the sink isn’t on one end of the building and the fridge on the other any more!
I am headed down to Ft. Lauderdale tonight to spend with weekend with my daughter Lauren. It’s time for "The Talk." Yes, it’s time for the "birds and the bees" talk. A couple of years ago I heard a story from a woman who was one of five girls. When it was their turn for "the talk" with Mom, they got to go away on a special "girls weekend." I thought it was such a neat idea that I wanted to do the same for my daughter. Kind of a coming-of-age ritual. Anyway, I know she’ll always remember this, so I wanted to make it special for her.
I’m a little nervous..okay, I’m a lot nervous, but she’s going to be in summer camp with kids older than her and I want her to hear it from me first. Wish me luck!
Want a chance to get your entire order for free? All orders placed over $75 by midnight tonight (6/12) will go into the hat. One lucky winner will have the entire amount of their order refunded - including shipping!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
As always, thanks for your business.

Nine years ago, when I was pregnant with Lauren, we decided to remodel our house. It all started because the a/c unit leaked and ruined our carpet. By the time we were done, we had redone the downstairs floors and totally redone the kitchen and all the bathrooms. We didn’t have a kitchen sink for weeks - we used to put all our dirty dishes in a laundry basket and carry them over to our neighbors and use their dishwasher.
During our remodel, a friend sent us a cartoon that showed the Devil standing at the Gates of Hell. Behind him were two doors. One said "Eternal Damnation" and the other said "Living in Your House While You’re Remodeling". "Pick one," the Devil says. "They’re pretty much the same."
Okay, so it’s not really that bad, but "Working in Your Office While You’re Expanding and Remodeling" has been quite the challenge. We have three suites and added a fourth. However, most of the "build-out" that we decided to do was in our existing space. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m practically "spatially disabled." I just can’t look at something on paper and see how it’s going to work in my mind. I’m more of a "I’ll figure out when it’s all done" kind of a gal. This is driving the building manager and the contractors nuts! Understandably so. But I can’t help it.
At lunch the other day, Lani said "What happened to our plan? It’s falling apart!" Desks don’t fit where we thought they would…something totally worked on paper, but then didn’t work in actuality…doors end up swinging open into the middle of a room (that only happened once)
Throughout it all, though, all the Scrap Your Trip employees have been wonderful! We have to move stuff out of the way, only to have to move it out of the way again the next day. Everything is in a state of chaos, but they just keep getting your orders out to you with a smile on their face. And as I mentioned before, the contractors have done a fantastic job of keeping the dust contained and cleaning up after themselves.
The last wall comes down today and then the demolition part is done. The last of the new carpet goes into the new suite tomorrow. The contractors should be done with all the drywall work next week and hopefully by then the electricians and the phone guy are done too. I’m ready for this to be over!
I posted a bunch of pictures below, so you can keep up with our progress.
309 new items! I know it’s a lot to look through (309 items plus the Bazzill matches for the SYT Die Cuts), but some really exciting items came in yesterday and we couldn’t keep them to ourselves.
Karen Foster Designs has come out with a stationary line! There are four designs, Ocean Escapade, Mystique (my favorite), Modern Safari and Azure Blooms. There are journal notebooks, notepads, magnetic notepads, sticky notes, note cards, thank you cards, file folders and an eco-friendly, reusable matching tote to hold everything. I’m a total notebook person (have to keep reminding myself to use the ones I already have) and this is a fantastic notebook. The insides of the covers are even decorated! I had to order extra because everyone in the office wanted some. Karen Foster obviously has a new artist, because this is a brand new look for them. I hope to see it carried over into their scrapbook lines.
Other new collections include: "Traveler" from Little Yellow Bicyle; "Old West" from Carolee’s Creations; "Hat’s Off" graduation from The Paper Company; "It’s My Party" from Bo Bunny, destination and sport stickers and papers from Stamping Station; sllimline punches from EK Success; a new Travel Album from Pioneer and "Say What" Journals, Tablets and Word sticker sheets from Little Yellow Bicyle.
The SYT designers were working on the following themes this week: Travel, Beach, Spring, Summer, Disney, Road Trip, Mexico, Thailand, Zoo, Sports, Wedding, Kids and of course, Scrapbooking!
We have two custom papers - Theatre Curtain and Grunge School and two custom die cuts - Pool Sign and Mr. and Mrs.

School’s out for summer!
Yesterday was my baby’s Kindergarten graduation. Just had to share a few pics with you. When he came out all dressed up in his "shoes just like Daddy’s" and his white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, hands in his pocket, I was just overwhelmed! He looked like a little man…where did my baby go?
The kids are so excited to be out of school for the summer! This is the first year they are doing the "summer camp" thing. Tennis camp, theatre camp, Sea World Camp and YMCA camp. No fair! I want to go to summer camp too!

June 5th, 2009
When you’re a kid, birthdays are all about fun. Chuck E. Cheese and Build-A-Bear and go-kart parties and enough presents to fill up the back of your parents’ car. One of the last birthday parties I went to for Logan was at a gymnastics center. All the moms and dads were standing watching the kids jump on the trampoline and swing up in the air. "This is no fair!" we all said. "Why do all the kids get to have fun and we just have to stand here and watch?"
Well, this past weekend, I had a birthday weekend that would rival any six year old party in fun. I do believe it was the best birthday of my adult life.
As I was unlocking my office door Friday morning, I noticed the blinds in my office were closed. "That’s odd" I thought to myself, "I don’t remember closing them when I left last night." As I opened the door, I saw all the birthday decorations. Some of the people in the office had decked out my office. (pictures start below). Then there was a surprise lunch for me at Olive Garden (Yum! Breadsticks!) We went to the movies Friday night (Disney/Pixar "Up!" - a really cute movie even if it was for the kids).
My husband Tony had told me that someone had a surprise day planned for me on Saturday. My friend and co-worker, Lani, had the day all planned out. Starbucks…shopping…lunch…more shopping. We had a blast! We were planning on getting a pedicure, but ran out of time. So I took my daughter, Lauren. She though it was really cool and it was so cute to watch her.
Then it was on to my dinner date with my husband to a yummy new-ish restaurant in Orlando called the "Ravenous Pig". If you ever get the chance - it is absolutely fantastic!
Sunday (my actual birthday) we were off to Disney World. This year you can get in free on your birthday, but if you are an annual pass holder, you can get a birthday FastPass good for everyone in your family for six rides. Magic Kingdom here we come! They give you a cute pin that says "Happy Birthday" and they write your name on it (I soon figured out why). We headed to lunch and they came out with streamers and Mickey Mouse head confetti for our table.
We got through all six rides in four hours and it was so great not to have to wait in line!
Since I had the pin on saying it was my birthday (with my name on it), every Disney employee we passed said "Happy Birthday Julie!" Everywhere we went, all day, people were saying "Happy Birthday!" They even let us ride in the front of the monorail!
After the Magic Kingdom, we headed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios to ride Rockin’ Roller Coaster. You have to be 48" tall to ride, and Logan has been measuring himself almost daily to see if he’s grown enough yet. Sunday he measured tall enough, so we all excited that we’d be able to ride together.
70 minutes of waiting in the hot Florida sun and it was finally our turn. Logan must have shrunk in the heat, because he was like 1/32" too short and they wouldn’t let him on. I have never seen him so disappointed in his life. Lauren was happy, though, because we did the parent switch and she got to ride twice. Got to go get Logan taller sneakers!
Have you had a great adult birthday? Tell us about it on the blog!
